Good drainage is essential for a rock garden, since most rocks plants will not survive damp conditions. A light soil on a gravelly subsoil will have sufficient draining, but a heavy claylike soil with a subsoil of clay may need artificial drainage if you canīt break through to a porous layer. This is particularly important on a flat site.
