Cover a brick chimney with a self-climbing perennial vine, like climbing hydrangea or silver-laced vine, neither of which will harm mortar.

However, they WILL harm surrounding wood shingles or clapboard. We had this problem and had to pull out our ivy. Best to use a twining vine like honeysuckle and provide wire supports on the masonry.
